Teddy Bear Cut at Velvet Paws Cat Grooming Greenvale

Who is the Teddy Bear Cut for?

Long-haired and medium-haired cats with knot-free coats — Persian, Ragdoll, Maine Coon, Birman, British Shorthair Longhair varieties.

About the Teddy Bear Cut

The Teddy Bear Cut is Velvet Paws' most-requested grooming style, especially among Persian, Ragdoll, and Maine Coon owners across Greenvale and Melbourne's north. Unlike a clipper-down lion cut, the teddy bear leaves around 2-4 cm of length all over the body, scissor-blended around the face, ears and tail to create a soft, rounded, plush look — exactly the silhouette the name suggests.

Because the teddy cut keeps coat length, it can only be done on cats whose fur is currently free of mats. Matted cats need to be de-matted (or lion-cut and grown out) first. We will assess the coat at the start of the appointment and recommend an alternative if matting is found — your time will not be wasted.

The cut suits cats whose owners want a maintenance reduction without going dramatically short. Brushing time at home drops noticeably, hairballs reduce, and shedding around the house is much easier to manage. Most owners book this every 6-10 weeks, depending on coat growth speed and how comfortable the cat is between visits.

What happens during the appointment

  1. Pre-groom assessment — coat check for mats, behaviour read, any health observations from your verbal history
  2. Bath in premium feline shampoo with a high-velocity de-shedding rinse
  3. Towel dry, then warm forced-air dry until coat is fully dry to the skin
  4. Scissor and clipper work — body, legs, sanitary area, tail base shaped to teddy silhouette
  5. Face, ears and paw pads finished by hand with curved scissors
  6. Nail trim, ear clean and final brush-out
  7. Pickup with cologne mist and bandana or bow if your cat is comfortable

What's included in the price

  • Premium shampoo and conditioning treatment
  • Forced-air blow dry
  • Full body teddy bear shaping
  • Sanitary trim and paw pad fur trim
  • Nail clipping and filing
  • Ear cleaning and check
  • Light health observation (skin, coat condition, body score)
  • Cologne and bandana / bow at finish

Aftercare

Most cats settle within 2-3 hours after pickup. The shorter coat means they may seek warmer spots for a day or two — provide a soft blanket. Brush at home twice a week with a wide-tooth comb to keep the cut crisp. Avoid baths at home for 5-7 days so the natural skin oils rebalance.

Teddy Bear Cut — Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the teddy bear cut last?

Most cats look freshly groomed for 4-6 weeks, then start to grow out. Owners typically rebook between week 8 and week 10.

Can my Persian get a teddy bear cut?

Yes — Persians are among the best candidates, provided their coat is currently mat-free. If matting is present we will recommend a Lion Cut for that visit and a teddy bear cut at the next appointment.

Is the teddy bear cut shorter than a lion cut?

The opposite — the teddy bear leaves 2-4 cm of length, while the lion cut clips down to about 5-10 mm. The teddy is fluffier; the lion is sleek.

Will my cat be cold afterwards?

No. The teddy keeps enough coat to insulate. We do not recommend it during the coldest weeks of winter for elderly or thin cats — discuss timing with us when you book.

Do you sedate cats for the teddy bear cut?

Never. We use gentle restraint and a calm environment for every cat at Velvet Paws.
