A pelted coat is matting that has progressed beyond individual mats into a single continuous sheet of fused fur, sometimes covering 60-100% of the cat's body. The pelt sits like a felt blanket on the cat's skin, often with debris, urine and skin secretions trapped underneath. Cats with full pelts are usually painful, depressed, sometimes hiding underlying weight loss or skin disease.
Removing a pelt is the most delicate work we do. The pelt must come off in pieces, separated from the live skin without pulling, with constant skin checks. We use clippers with extra-small blades that lift the pelt edge-by-edge, sometimes scissors to relieve specific sections, and we will stop the session if the cat shows distress and resume on a different day.
Most pelted cats we see come from rescue contexts, recently rehomed surrendered cats, very senior cats whose self-grooming has stopped, and the homes of people whose health has prevented brushing. We treat these cats with extra patience and we do not judge — most owners are deeply embarrassed and our job is to help, not to lecture.
**What to expect afterwards:** the cat will look different — leaner, smaller, sometimes with skin areas that need a few weeks to recover. Owners often say their cat 'becomes a different animal' once the pelt is off — playful, affectionate, eating better. Coat regrows evenly in 2-3 months with regular maintenance.

Aftercare
Many pelted cats need a follow-up vet visit for any skin issues found. We will tell you honestly if so. The cat may seem unsettled for 24-48 hours as they re-discover sensation in skin that has been covered for months. Provide quiet warm spots and avoid handling the affected areas more than necessary. Brushing at home should restart only after 2 weeks, very gently, with a wide-tooth comb.
