Lion Cut for Matted Coats — Cat Grooming Greenvale
A full Lion Cut for cats whose coat has multiple mats throughout. Includes the additional time, skin protection, and slower technique that matted coats require.
Who is the Lion Cut for Matted Coats for?
Cats with widespread matting where individual mat removal would take too long or be too distressing for the cat.
About the Lion Cut for Matted Coats
When matting is widespread — neck, back, sides, legs, belly all affected — the standard Lion Cut takes much longer because the clipper must travel under the mats without nicking the skin underneath. Mats can hide skin sores, oil buildup, and even insect bites. Going slowly and carefully is essential, both for safety and for the cat's experience.
This service is the same final result as the standard Lion Cut — short body, full mane, pom-poms on the legs, fluffy tail tip — but priced and paced for the extra time required. We use cooler-running clippers, take more rest breaks for both cat and groomer, and apply skin-soothing rinse afterwards if irritation is found.
Around 1 in 4 first-time cats we see for matting issues need this service. The good news: after one clean lion cut the coat grows back evenly, and with regular brushing at home plus a de-shedding spa every 8-12 weeks, your cat may never need this service again.

Aftercare
If skin irritation was found, follow any specific guidance we give at pickup (e.g. monitor a particular area, apply a recommended ointment). Avoid baths at home for 7-10 days. Brush at home twice a week — a wide-tooth comb is fine for short coat — to prevent matting recurrence.
Lion Cut for Matted Coats — Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this $60 more than a regular Lion Cut?
Because matted coats take 30-60 minutes longer and require more careful technique. We do not cut corners on a matted cat to save time.
Can I prevent matting in the future?
Yes — brushing 2-3 times a week with a wide-tooth comb plus a de-shedding spa every 8-12 weeks for double-coated breeds prevents most matting.
My cat has one large pelted mat — is this the right service?
If a single mat covers a large area as a single sheet, that is a "pelt" — see Full Matted Pelted Coat ($250). For multiple distinct mats, this service is right.
Will my cat have bald patches?
Sometimes a small area looks slightly thinner where a tight mat was — this is the live coat trapped under the mat being released. It evens out in 2-4 weeks.
