Who is the Matt Removal & Detangling for?

Cats with scattered mats but mostly intact coat — owners who want to keep coat length where possible.

About the Matt Removal & Detangling

Matt Removal is for cats whose coat has 3-10 distinct mats that can be individually addressed without clipping the whole body short. Common locations: behind the ears, under the chin, where the harness rubs, around the back legs, and on the belly.

We use specialised mat-splitting tools and a combination of detangling spray, slow comb-through, and clipping the mat at its base where needed. The aim is to keep as much coat length as possible while removing every mat. This service is significantly more time-intensive than a regular lion cut — mat-by-mat work cannot be rushed without injuring the cat — hence the higher price.

Whether matt removal or a full Lion Cut for Matted Coats is the right choice depends on the matting density. We will assess on arrival and tell you honestly. If the matting is too widespread, the lion cut is faster, safer and better for the cat — and we will not push the more expensive option for the sake of revenue.

**Why mats matter:** mats are not just an aesthetic problem. As they tighten they pull on the skin and reduce blood flow underneath, causing pain, irritation, and sometimes open sores. A heavily matted coat can hide skin issues entirely — owners often say 'my cat became playful again' after a clear-up.

What happens during the appointment

  1. Coat assessment — count and locate every mat
  2. Decide mat-by-mat: split with tool, detangle with spray + comb, or clip at base
  3. Slow, careful work on each mat individually
  4. Bath after mat removal (mats trap dirt and oils)
  5. Forced-air dry, full brush-through to verify no mats remain
  6. Nail trim, ear clean, sanitary tidy
  7. Pickup with notes on prevention

What's included in the price

  • Mat-by-mat removal (no full clip-down)
  • Detangling spray and tool work
  • Bath after mat removal
  • Forced-air blow dry
  • Nail trim, ear clean, sanitary tidy
  • Brushing-at-home guidance

Aftercare

The de-matted areas may have slightly thinner coat — this is normal and grows back in 4-8 weeks. Brush at home every 2-3 days to prevent recurrence. Pay particular attention to the areas where mats were found; they tend to recur in the same spots.

Matt Removal & Detangling — Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from a lion cut for matted coats?

Matt Removal preserves as much coat length as possible by addressing mats individually — best for 3-10 distinct mats. A Lion Cut for Matted Coats clips the whole body short — best for widespread matting.

Why does this cost more than a regular Lion Cut?

Mat-by-mat removal takes considerably longer than a clean clip-down. We charge for the time and care, not the visual result.

Will it hurt my cat?

Live mats already pull on the skin and cause discomfort. We use detangling sprays, splitting tools, and gentle technique to remove them with minimum stress. Most cats are visibly more comfortable afterwards.

My cat has just one or two small mats — do I need this service?

If matting is very minor, the standard Lion Cut, Teddy Bear Cut or De-shedding Spa may be enough. Send us a photo of the mats before booking and we will recommend the right service.
