Who is the Nail Trim Only for?

Cats with sharp nails damaging furniture or skin, indoor-only cats whose nails do not wear naturally, senior cats whose nails grow into paw pads.

About the Nail Trim Only

Nail trimming is the single most-overlooked piece of cat care. Indoor cats do not wear their nails down naturally; outdoor cats may keep front nails trimmed by climbing but rarely manage rear nails or dewclaws. Untrimmed nails curl back and can grow into the paw pad — particularly in senior cats who do not stretch and scratch as much. This is painful and easy to prevent.

We trim all 18 nails: 5 on each front paw (including dewclaw) and 4 on each rear paw. Cuts are made at the appropriate angle, just before the quick (the pink blood vessel inside the nail). For cats with very dark nails where the quick is hard to see, we err on the conservative side — small trims are safer than nicking the quick.

Nail trims are also the right entry-level service for nervous cats who have never been to a groomer. The appointment is short, low-stress, and lets the cat learn that the studio is a calm place. Many of our regulars started with nail-only visits and progressed to full grooms over time.

What happens during the appointment

  1. Cat is gently held in a feline-friendly position
  2. Each paw lifted in turn, nails extended individually
  3. Trim with feline-grade clippers, then a brief file to smooth edges
  4. Quick check of paw pads for cracks or debris
  5. Pickup

What's included in the price

  • Clip and file of all 18 nails
  • Paw pad check
  • Optional ear glance if you ask

Aftercare

No aftercare needed. Cats may walk slightly differently for a few minutes as they adjust. If you notice any nail bleeding once at home, apply gentle pressure with a clean tissue for 30 seconds — bleeding is rare but harmless.

Nail Trim Only — Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I trim my cat's nails?

Indoor cats: every 4-6 weeks. Outdoor cats: every 8-12 weeks (front nails wear faster). Senior cats: every 3-4 weeks because nails grow faster and feet are stretched less.

Can I just do this at home?

You can — many owners do — but if your cat is wriggly, has dark nails, or you are nervous about clipping the quick, professional trimming is safer. The $30 cost is also lower than most vet practices charge for the same service.

Do you trim dewclaws?

Yes, all 18 nails including front dewclaws. Some cats also have rear dewclaws (rare) — we trim those too.

What if my cat is too stressed?

We never force a trim. If your cat shows real distress we stop, you only pay for the nails completed, and we offer to retry on a different day.
